National Education Policy was launched way back in 1986 for the first time. It is found that a lot of changes is required in the education policy for the development and growth of the nation. Considering this in mind, Union cabinet has made the necessary changes in the Old National Education Policy (NEP) and launched a new national education policy. The changes has been made for transformative reforms in the schools and higher education system. In this article today we are going to provide you detailed information in respect of new National Education Policy (NEP) 2023 including its benefits, features, and other related details.

Union cabinet has launched New National Education Policy on 29 July 2020. The old education policy of India was replaced with the new education policy about 34 years later due to main loop holes in the previous policy. New education policy is based on four pillars known as assess, equity quality and accountability. The new education policies structure is based on 5 + 3 + 3 + 4 structure which comprise 12 years of schooling and 3 years of pre-schooling/ Anganwadi.

To make Indian Education System as a global knowledge superpower various changes was required in the education policy. To do so, in 2020 Government of India has replaced the old education policy with the new education policy. Old National Education Policy structure of 10 + 2 was replaced with the new one which is 5 + 3 + 3 + 4. Now the education system will become more flexible holistic and multi disciplinary. The new education system will bring out the unique capabilities of the students.

Objective Of New National Education Policy

The motive of Indian government behind launching the upgraded national education policy is to make the Indian education a global knowledge super power. The new policies based on four pillars which is going to make Indian education more flexible, holistic and multi disciplinary.

Features Of National Education Policy:

Here we have some of the features of new national education policy:

• Reform in school education
  • Foundation literacy and numeracy will be the main focus of new national education policy by 2025
  • Examinations will hold in second 5^th and 8^th standard only instead of every academic year.
  • Board examinations will hold in 10^th and 12^th standard but it will re-designed. 
  • Board examination will hold twice a year and have two different parts: objective and descriptive.
  • Coding will introduced to the students and experimental learning will be adopted from 6th standard.
  •  Breakfast will also include in the mid day meal scheme. 
• Reform in Higher Education
  • Under graduation program will be a 4 year multi disciplinary Bachelors degree with multiple exit options
    • First year complete- certificate
    • 2 years complete- diploma
    • 3 years complete- bachelor’s degree
    • 4 years complete- multi disciplinary Bachelors degree 
  • M.Phil course will be discontinued
  • To regulate the higher education, a separate Commission will set up (Higher Education Commission of India).
  • The motive of the commission will be to increase the enrollment ratio in higher education degree programs
  • Higher education along with Teachers education excludes medical and legal education will regulates by the National Higher education regulatory Council.
  • National Council for teacher education, All India Council for Technical Education and University grand commission will replaced by the higher education grant council.
  • Higher education grand council will create for funding and financing of University and colleges.
  • Graduate attributes will frame by the general education council
  • Veterinary Council of India, the Council of architecture, the Indian Council of agriculture research and the National Council for vocational education and training main include the other PSSB’s.
  • National testing agency will perform additional responsibility of conducting entrance examination for admission to university is across the country in addition to the JEE mains and neet exam.
  • The motive to change in the existing national education policy is to internationalize education in India
  • Campuses of foreign university can be set up in India.
  • Private University and public University fee will be fixed

Stages of National Education

There will be four stages in the new national education policy which is based on 5 + 3 + 3 + 4 model:

• Foundation stage– education is divided into two parts which is called 3 years of pre-schooling or Anganwadi followed by the class first and second in primary school. Foundation stage will cover 3 to 8 years of child education. The focus is on activity-based learning at this stage.
• Preparatory stage– class 3^rd to 5^th student will cover at preparatory stage. Introduction of new subjects like speaking, reading, writing, physical education, languages, science and math’s at this stage.
• Middle stage– add this stage students from class 6th to 8 will introduce to more abstract concept in the subject of mathematics, social science, science, arts and humanities.
• Last one is secondary stage– add this stage students from class 9^th to 12^th will cover. There will be two phases. In phase one students from class 9th and 10th will cover and in phase 2 students from class 11^th and 12^th will cover. Students will intend to inculcate multi disciplinary study couple with depth and critical thinking. Students will get multiple subject options at secondary stage.
